Battle for the Salient at Spotsylvania, Virginia May 12, 1864 |
Unlike some of his military friends, Alonzo had little ambition, never advancing to a higher military post, preferring instead non-frontline positions such as provost guard, mule driver, and ambulance patrol. Alonzo was not a coward however, fighting in some of the war's most deadly battles including Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863), Spotsylvania (May 9-18, 1864), and Petersburg (June 6-20, 1864). In early August, 1864, during a confrontation near Frederick, Maryland, Alonzo sustained an arm injury, a "hole. . .clear down to the Bone," which took about a month to heal. Six months later, in March of 1865, he spent about three weeks in a United States military hospital in Albany, New York for a back injury. |
