Some of the entries show that A. S. Green bought goods, such as wood, coal, and straw, from his employer. This was a common mid-nineteenth century practice. Employers needed certain goods, as coal and wood, at the factory. The companies purchased these products in bulk at prices cheaper than their workers could buy on the market. The employers sometimes sold residual goods to their employees at these discounted rates. Saratoga Manufacturing, a producer of fabric, also sold employees cloth.

Code: Yellow print is commentary added to transcribed journal entries by website author. $ = Money, # = Pound. The # sysmbol is a change from the ledger notation of ' to minimize confusion with the more common symbol for feet. The ledgers used ' for both pounds and feet.
