Although the 77th regiment's first recruitment took place in the fall of 1861, Alonzo did not volunteer. Opportunities for better employment in Victory Mills may have kept Alonzo initially out of the war as his name appears in the Saratoga Manufacturing ledgers shortly after the September enlistment campaign. Over the next year, Alonzo's attitude changed. By August of 1862, he was ready for adventure, enlisting to "go down and see the world," as he explained to his wife.
