Initially, Alonzo had no intentions of joining the army. Alonzo was comfortable at home with his wife and young daughter. He did not volunteer to join the army during the first recruitment. A year later, Alonzo told his wife he was ready for an adventure. We learned from posters that a bounty was offered to volunteers. It is very possible that the fifty dollar bounty was an important added incentive.
