A Civil War ambulance squad demonstrates Shortly after Albert S. Green's demotion, the military sent him to Gettysburg to help take care of the sick and wounded. He possibly followed similar procedures. |
During Albert's three years of service, he never moved up in ranking. Instead, through Alonzo Bump's letters and Albert's muster record, it becomes clear that Albert was actually demoted from sergeant to private in July 1863 after the battle of Gettysburg. Later that summer, Albert was also sent by the military to Gettysburg to help the ambulance squad take care of the sick and wounded. Whether Albert's removal into this seemingly less prestigious and rigorous role came as part of his demotion or to accommodate an illness as suggested by Alonzo is not fully understood. The change, however, must have been a serious emotional blow to Albert, although documents have not yet been uncovered which reveal his feelings. Despite his demotion, Albert continued to serve his country until 1865.
