Answer to Letter No 2
Camp Near White Oke Church
May 19 1863

Dear wife

It is with Plesure that i sit Down to wright to you to night i received your most welcome Letter and it found me well and engoing good health i was very Glad to hear that you wore well i Don't want you to wery about me for i will try and take care of myself
i hope that if i haft to Go in to Battle that God will spare my Life to come out alive But i Don't think that thiss war will ever see much more fighting But still we cant tell Mary i have hurd from Mort he is well he got wonded a Little a Peace of shell hit him on the Back But Did not hurt him much i hurd that he had Disearted But he sent me word that it want so he sed that he was the Last fellow that would Diseart John Hornibrook and Sandy Lambaart is hear to night and i ame a Goin to try and Git a Pass to go up with them it is good wayes to walk they Ley about 10 miles from hear But i want to see Mort and i ame a Goin if i can git away Earl Green is sick to Day he Don't feeal very well nor he Don't Look very well But i think he will git Better soon for they are all tiard out for they all had a very hard time over the Rivar The old Boys say that it was the hardest Battle they every got in to

Note: The "old Boys" refers to the men who enlisted in the 77th in 1861. By the time Alonzo enlisted in 1862, the men were seasoned soldiers.

Earl wants you to tell his wife that he has not had only one Letter sinc he came Back acrost the rivar and he has ritten hur five and he Begins to think that she has Disearted him i have Got 4 or 5 since he Got one Mary i Love to hear from you often it Dos me Good every time i Git one from you i Got a Young Lady's Likness and it Lookt very much Like Ell Burke Tell Ell that I thank hur very much for hur Picture and i will try and returne the Gift some way i shod it to John HorneyBrook and he sed that it Lookt Just Like hur i have Bin Looking for Mothers But i Don see eny thing of it yet But i hope that it wont Bee Long Before i shall see thair face down hear and tell Marchia i want hur to send me hur Picture i never hear a word from hur i Gess she Don't think much of me But if i have Don eny think rong i ask hur forgivness tell hur shee Must forgit what has Past and Gon and think for the future Mary if i keep writing to you every Day i shall haft to have some more stamps i have 8 or 9 Left it Don't seeam as thoe i had used so meny and i have not ritten to eny Boddy But you only mother Bump Mary A S Greene ses that he has Got his Battery Plantd he Leys in the tent next to me he is a Bloing off steam he has Bin Eating Beeans to Day So that accounts for it all Give my Love to all so Good By
