Bedford Past and Present
A Photographic Slide show
Bedford Historical Society
Community Images
Exhibits, educational programs, themed events, and outdoor festivals are some of the way Bedford Historical Society engages the community in the experience of history. At a September 2008 gala with a Revolutionary Era motif, photographer Yan Koyfman captured the numerous activities, community interactions, and smiling faces. The slide show presents a few of Yan's photographs, an eye-catching blend of youthful participants, re-enactors, and pony rides. Since the Historical Society serves as a repository for documents, photographic media, artifacts, and historic buildings data, the slide show second half highlights some of Bedford's architecturally significant churches and compares a few archival community images with 2008 photographs. Within the latter part also is a picture of the town cemetery, a reminder that the Historical Society holds a registry for all graveyards in Bedford as well as original materials, books, and pamphlets with information on many of the notable former residents. One of the people buried in the cemetery is Benjamin Isaacs, the author of some of the letters found in the web exhibit, Maria Rogers of Bedford: A Young Woman's Life in Early Nineteenth Century New York State.

Other events sponsored by Bedford Historical Society in the Fall of 2008 included a photographic exhibit entitled Rhythms of Nature with Silent Auction and a cocktail reception for a new publication, Building Bedford - One Century at a Time: New Stories about an Old Village, by Curator Emily Zucker in November 2008 and Holiday tours of the Court House in December 2008. As an organization committed to meeting the needs of the Bedford region, the Historical Society supports community building events, such as in the 2008 Bedford Village Business Association's Jingle Pass Weekend , a "shop 'til you drop" spree, and the Northern Westchester Hospital Auxilliary's Holiday Boutique at Historical Hall, a building available for public and private functions. Contact Historical Society for the schedule.
